John Dennis Molstad, age 80 of Dallas, TX, passed away at home on March 5, 2021 after a yearlong battle with leukemia. He was born in Duluth, MN on July 3, 1940 to George and Ann Molstad. John grew up in Proctor, MN and graduated from Proctor High School in 1958. He attended St. Olaf University and graduated from University of Minnesota-Duluth, with a degree in history. He served in the US Navy on the destroyer, Charles H. Roan.
John married Janet Horn and recently celebrated their 51st anniversary. John and Jan were blessed with two children and two grandchildren. John was a parishioner at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church in Garland, TX.
John spent most of his career in Catholic education and went on to receive his Master of Education Administration from Louisiana State University. He was a beloved teacher of history and government. Throughout his career, he was a mentor and role-model for many new teachers. He truly believed in the value of education and the impact it has on young lives. He spent the later part of his career working for
the City of Dallas in the City Attorney’s office.
John had many passions in his life. He was an avid tennis coach and player. Sailing was also an important part of his life, racing in many regattas, and even sailing through the Caribbean. In his later years, golf became John’s primary activity. Most days, you could find John on the golf course with his numerous golfing buddies.
John had many wonderful hobbies, but his biggest passion was his family. John and Jan spent many years traveling the United States and Europe. He liked to say that one of his biggest accomplishments was traveling to all 50 States. He was also a devoted father and grandfather. You could always find John attending every event and game cheering on his grandchildren.
John is survived by his loving and devoted family. Wife, Jan; Children, Neil Molstad (Kathryn) of Seattle, WA, and Emily Shelton (Stephen) of Richardson, TX; Grandchildren, Claire Shelton and Michael Shelton of Richardson, TX; Siblings, Lois Lewis of Oak Harbor, WA, George L. Molstad (Nancy) of Twig, MN, Susan Molstad of East Lansing, MI; many nieces and nephews; and his rescue dog Stella.
The family would like to thank Dr. Andrew Whiteley and Texas Oncology-Baylor Charles A. Sammons Cancer Center for their excellent care and compassion.
A memorial service for John will be held on April 14 2021, 1:30pm at St Joseph Catholic Church in Richardson, TX.
