Joan Story

Joan is survived by her daughters, Shirley (Walter) Minty and Marjorie (DJ) Hastings, her sister Shirley (Andy) Upshall, her grandchildren; Emily Minty, Luke Hastings, Daniel Minty, and Aidan Hastings, and her step-daughter Tanya (Randy) Rubattino

Born and raised in England, Joan earned a certificate of Orthoptics from Oxford University. In 1955, she sailed on the Queen Mary to New York then flew to Seattle for a 2-year job opportunity. This was the beginning of a long career as an Orthoptist, caring for patients at Virginia Mason, Children’s Hospital, and the Children’s Eye Doctor in Redmond.

In addition to a successful career, Joan was a loving mother to two daughters. She kept them active with her support as a Girl Scout leader, canoeing, summers in Eastern Washington as a sailplane crew and many trips to England to visit family.

In 1992, Joan married the love of her life, Joe Story. They had many happy years together enjoying their shared love of photography, RVing, friends and their combined family. Joe was an avid supporter of Joan’s love of rubber stamping. He preceded her in death in 2006.

A memorial service will be held at 1 pm, Saturday, May 11 at Greenwood Memorial in Renton.
