Carter attended Booker T. High School in Shreveport, Louisiana. Served his country in the United States Navy for 10 years. Received Christ and was baptized on March 23, 1980. On August 28, 1982 he married his wife of 31 years Rosie Lee Hammond.
Carter (Gill) was Loved by his sister Martha Westmanland; children Kevin(Bev) Gilliam, Larry Hammond, David(Mary) Hammond, Yvonne Ballard, Gina(Tony) Roy, Laverne Hammond, Makeba Knight, Kenya Hammond, Dondi Brooks, God-son
Daniel Brooks and many other family and friends. Bro. Gilliam was predeceased by his wife Rosie Lee Hammond, parents, 6 siblings, daughter Shelley Christie and sons Charles Frankie Hammond and Anthony Ballard.
Booster as he was affectionately named by his school mates enjoyed home remodel-ing, golf, fishing, football, ties, hats and collecting coins. Carter in his youth had a stride in his walk. He was always go-go-go. He would not let anyone to mess with his sisters. His sister Martha described him in one word “GREAT”. During his high school he played football. The coach asked the team “who wants
No. 13”. He replied “I do”. He often said to the coach ”Put me in coach”.
Carter received 3 Good Conduct awards during his time in the Navy and the Spike Record of 853 TONS in December of 1979 while working at Bethlehem Steel. His supervisor at Costco described him as a model employee who set a good example, showed kindness and respect, did a lot more than was required and was well liked and respected by all the staff. He was part of RCJ Printing.
He would always say “Give the man his 8 hours” and “Hey Buddy Row”
