It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Mary at the age of 88 years. Mary was born on the family farm near Kamsack, SK. When she was about 5 years old, her family moved to Kylemore, SK. Mary attended Kylemore North School, walking 3 ½ miles to school each day. After her schooling, she worked as a waitress: first in Canora, then Yorkton. She moved to British Columbia for a few months and worked there too. Mary met the love of her life, George Aschenbrener, at a dance and they danced together for the rest of their lives, never missing a dance at Fox Hills School. They were married on October 18, 1955 at the Sokochoff family farm in Kylemore. Mary moved to the Aschenbrener farm north of Cupar where they worked hard growing crops and raising animals. Mary especially enjoyed gardening and cooking – her specialties were buns, borscht, and cabbage rolls. No one went away hungry! She also loved a good card game and bus trips with the girls to different casinos. Mary loved spending time with her family and enjoyed all family gatherings. ‘Ma Perkins’ and ‘The Young and The Restless’ were her favourite soap operas. Mary was predeceased by her husband George in 2018; great-granddaughter Erica in 2012; parents Louis and Annie Sokochoff; and her siblings Fred, Bill, Molly, and Anne. Mary will be forever remembered by her family: son Brian (Donna); grandchildren David (Melissa), Jon (Gerry), Michael (Cassie), Wayne (Kirsten); great-grandchildren Emily, Brayden, Lukas, Leah, and Becca; Leila (Joe) Brodner and family; along with many nieces, nephews, and friends. There will be a private Graveside Funeral at a later date. The family would like to offer a special thank-you to the staff at Arbor Oaks Manor for the loving care they gave Mary during her last days.
