Irene was born in Avonhurst, Saskatchewan, on May 17, 1923. She grew up and lived through tough and trying times including the great depression and World War II. She always made the best of any situation and worked hard to ensure that those around her were well cared for.
Over the years, she had a number of jobs in and out of the home. She was a waitress, worked in a bakery, baby sat for family and others, sold Avon, was a clerk in a toy store and, of course, a dedicated homemaker.
Irene’s greatest joy was being with family and friends. She took on the role of family historian and dedicated many hours to keeping family records and was the go-to when anyone needed family information.
She was an avid Saskatchewan Roughriders fan, rarely missing a game on TV, and never hesitant to praise, or berate, players and coaches alike. She was overjoyed when the Riders sent her a letter on her 100th birthday.
As her doctor once told her, “You have to be tough to live past 100”. She would describe herself as “determined”, and always made sure that what needed doing got done, regardless of how long it took, or the effort involved.
Irene will truly be missed.
