In Loving Memory
1949-2021
Rodney Lobert Thompson passed away peacefully on the evening of Saturday, December 4, 2021, at his home in Red Bluff, California surrounded by his wife and three sons. Rodney “Rod” was born April 25, 1949 in Flint, Michigan to Herbert William Thompson and Lola Maude (Hartwig) Thompson. His devotion to his wife and children was paramount throughout his life. Never hesitant to share an affectionate word or a compassionate spirit, he was truly a loving husband and caring father.
Rod moved to Red Bluff from Portland, Oregon in 1972 to serve as the youth pastor at the First Church of God. He married his beloved wife, Cindy, on September 21, 1974, at Holladay Park Church of God in Portland and together they started a blessed life in the Red Bluff community. Educated at Warner Pacific College (B.A.) in Portland and the University of San Francisco (M.A.), he built a successful counseling practice, Counseling North, providing support and guidance to those in need. More recently he continued to pursue his passion in helping others and was elected to the Red Bluff High School Board, serving from 2014 to 2020. A pillar of the Red Bluff community, Rod was an ordained minister for 50 years and faithfully served as a youth pastor, associate pastor, lead pastor, and elder at the First Church of God where he dedicated decades to spreading kindness and the word of God. The first to lend a helping hand or offer words of encouragement, Rod touched many lives throughout his career and will be remembered for his endless compassion.
With his kind heart, wisdom, and wit, he developed countless personal relationships through church, schools, work, and sports. He was often seen coaching or cheering on his sons at sporting events. He had an affinity for Mexican food that he passed down to his children, and always enjoyed time spent with his family whether at his log home or Mill Creek Restaurant near Mineral. He will be greatly missed!
His memory will live on through his cherished wife, Cindy Kaye (Walden) Thompson; loving children Michael (Erin), Matthew (Cassie), and Mark (Jordan); beautiful grandchildren Avery, Owen, Quinn, and Sloan; and devoted siblings Becky, Peggy, Landon, and Martin.
Friends are invited to a celebration of life service at the First Church of God, 750 Luther Rd., Red Bluff, CA on Saturday, December 18 at 2:00 p.m. directly followed by a fellowship reception at the same location. Interment at Oak Hill Cemetery will be held with family in coordination with Hoyt-Cole Chapel of the Flowers.
