He was born in Racine, Wisconsin, to parents Peter and Sophia (Fabish) Chechak. Tom proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army during the Korean War, and later joined the Kent VFW. He was a member of the University Parish Newman Center.
Tom graduated from Ravenna High School, where he played varsity football. He continued to closely follow Ravens Football, as well as all of the Cleveland sports teams. Tom also enjoyed bowling with his brothers and brothers-in-law.
He retired as a meat cutter from Kroger’s and was a member of UFCW Local 880. After retirement, Tom and his wife owned and operated the Stone Jug Restaurant on Franklin Street in Kent. He enjoyed life, and loved to have a good time. Tom played the guitar and loved to sing with his family. He always wanted everyone to be happy, especially his extended family and friends, whether it was at the Stone Jug or poolside at the home that he and his brothers built.
Tom is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Dolores (Smith) Chechak, and their children: Chris Chechak of Evergreen, Colorado, Paul Chechak of Ravenna, and Lori Chechak of Dublin, Ohio, as well as his grandchildren: Matthew (Karice) Chechak, Josh Chechak, and Sarah McDonald, his sister: Patricia (Richard) Taylor, and brothers-in-law: Franklin (Barbara) Smith and Tom (Ann) Smith.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter-in-law Valerie Chechak, his brothers Arthur, Fred, and Carl Chechak, and his sisters Helen Karaffa, Claire Palmer, Katherine Hresko, Bernice Ensinger, and Marian Horner.
Friends will be received Friday, September 4, 2015, from 5:00 – 7:00 PM at the Wood-Kortright-Borkoski Funeral Home, 703 E. Main St., Ravenna, where funeral services will be held on Saturday at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery with military honors provided by VFW Post 1055 and the US Army Honor Guard.
