He was born March 29, 1944, in Ravenna, a son of the late Clifton G. and Ruth I. (McCord) Fankhauser. Bob spent most of his adult life in law enforcement, having served on the Ravenna and Kent Police Departments from 1967 - 1978. He was then employed by the adult probation department, retiring as the Chief of the Adult Probation Department of Portage County. He was also a member and served as past president of FOP #70.
Mr. Fankhauser was a very active member of the community. He served on the Ravenna City School Board, Maplewood School Board, Ravenna Ravens Hall of Fame Committee, Ravenna Parks and Recreation Board, and was a past president of the Ravenna Athletic Booster Club. Bob was a member of Ravenna Elks Lodge 1076 and enjoyed bowling in its league. He also enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s sporting events, playing cards, and going to the movies every Friday night.
Bob’s legacy lives on through the gift of organ donation. In 1993 he donated a kidney to his son. Bob later became an advocate and speaker for the National Kidney Foundation of Ohio.
Survivors include his beloved wife of 43 years Linda (Liston) Fankhauser; children: Marla (Roger) Boltz of Ravenna, Mark (Jill) Fankhauser of Kent, Beth (Jason) Russell of Lenoir City, TN; grandchildren: Michael Boltz, Molly Fankhauser, and Robert “Jake” Fankhauser; brother: William (Kay) Fankhauser of Kent; sister-in-law: Anita Fankhauser of Jonesborough, TN; also survived by many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Robert was preceded in death by his brother Clifton Fankhauser.
Friends will be received Sunday, February 27, 2011, from 1-3 and 5-7 PM at the Wood-Kortright-Borkoski Funeral Home, 703 E. Main St., Ravenna, where funeral services will be held on Monday at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery.
