He was born May 11, 1936, in Spencer, West Virginia, to parents Ord Charles Smith and Norma (Engle) Shilliday. Joe graduated from Southeast High School and then proudly served his country as a veteran of the US Army during the Korean War.
Joseph was a hardworking man. He was a commercial masonry contractor and owner of Smith and Gough Construction. Joe also tirelessly worked on his farm in Edinburg. In his spare time, Joe enjoyed spending time deer hunting at his cabin in Pennsylvania with family and friends. He was also an active member of his community, belonging to the Deerfield Charity Masonic Lodge 530, VFW Post 1055, American Legion 331, Ravenna Elks 1076, Ravenna Moose 1234, Ravenna Eagles 2164, as well as the NRA and Korean War Veterans Association.
Joseph is survived by his children: Joseph (Joy) Smith Jr., Ronald (Vicki) Smith and Cheryl (Dave) Kemble, 9 grandchildren: and 15 great-grandchildren. Joe is also survived by his sister Carol (Alan) Stroup, brothers Roger Shilliday and Dave Shilliday, along with many nieces and nephews.
A visitation for Joseph will be held Monday, April 4, 2022 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Wood-Kortright-Borkoski Funeral Home, 703 E Main St, Ravenna, Ohio 44266. A funeral service will occur Tuesday, April 5, 2022 at 11:00 AM at Wood-Kortright-Borkoski Funeral Home.
