John was born in Ravenna, Ohio on July 13, 1920 to parents Jacob S. and Alberta DeYoung. He retired from Goodyear Aerospace where he enjoyed a career as a draftsman. Prior to starting at Goodyear in 1955, John worked on the farm on which he was born and also worked at the Ravenna Arsenal. He enjoyed gardening, aircraft, reading, music, being in plays and going to the Weathervane Playhouse for plays and musicals. He was a member of the Army Air Corps in WWII, supervised the antiques booth at the Portage County Fair with his wife Jane and was a Boy Scout leader and 4-H leader. John enjoyed 35 years of singing with the Community Choir and was a member of the First Congregational Church and the church choir. John was a Portage County resident for 94 years, most recently residing at Longmeadow Care Center, where he was this year’s Portage County Randolph Fair King candidate representing Longmeadow.
John leaves his children: Larry A. (Joyce) DeYoung of Devon, Pa., Barbara A. DeYoung of Ravenna and Wayne M. (Barbara) DeYoung of Columbus, O. Left also to cherish his memory are his 5 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
John was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Jane M. DeYoung and his 6 siblings.
Friends will be received on Friday, August 22, 2014 from 4:00PM until 7:00PM at the Wood-Kortright-Borkoski Funeral Home, 703 E. Main St., Ravenna, where funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 23rd at 10:00AM with Rev. Jerry Kruse officiating. Interment will follow at Maple Gove Cemetery.
