Bill graduated from Marshall University and served honorably in the U.S. Air Force. He was employed for many years by Ryder System, beginning as a District Manager and achieving the position of Group Vice President. Thus began his love of the trucking industry. He traveled extensively throughout the US with trips to Africa and many European countries. He later purchased a truck dealership in Salt Lake City, UT and lived there eight years before returning to the east. He came to Raleigh in 1989 to assist in the operation of Webb Technical Group. A modern day nomad, he lived in eight states and traveled through and learned all he could about each one.
He enjoyed traveling, crossword puzzles, cooking, cigars and his family (especially his Uncle Tito). A storyteller at heart, he loved meeting and conversing with new people and learning all he could about everyone he met. He regaled anyone who would listen with the stories of the places he'd been and the people he’d come across. He loved his entire family, including his many nieces and nephews. Bill’s proudest accomplishment was his children, and he loved them beyond measure.
He is lovingly remembered by his wife of 41 years, Maryanne Morgan Sims; children: Gregory Scott Sims; Lisa Sims Lill; Elizabeth Sims Hedrick and husband Shane; Patrick Camden Sims and wife Magdalena Sledzik Sims; five grandchildren; sister: Betty Sue Wilson and husband Chuck; and by other family and many friends.
In recent years, he most enjoyed the company of Angelo Meyer and his other friends at the Bistro, where they exchanged stories and laughs over soup and shrimp.
He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings: Carolyn Sims Rader, John Benjamin Sims, Marjorie Sims Crooks and Nancy Sims Webb.
A Celebration of Bill’s Life will be held on Saturday, June 18, 2016 at Mitchell Funeral Home at 2 pm, with a reception to follow.
Memorial contributions in Bill’s memory may be made to the charity of your choice. And like old mother duck, he just didn’t give a quack.
