Shirley Delena Glantz, age 89, of Raleigh, North Carolina, died early Monday, December 12, 2016 at her residence. She was born April 5, 1927 in Turtle Creek, PA, daughter of the late Clarence and Myra (Delaplain) Swope. On May 5, 1947 she married Eugene M. Glantz, who predeceased her in 1994.
She is survived by her six children, Douglas Glantz (Darla) of Doylestown PA; Larry Glantz (Marti Blair) of Cape Elizabeth ME; Bonnie Zarlenga (Allen) of Hershey, PA; Martin Glantz (Lisa) of Bristow, VA; Gary Glantz (Delores) of Accokeek MD; and Leisa Glantz (Frederick Davis) of Raleigh, NC; 12 grandchildren (Amanda Allen of Australia and Meredith Glantz of Florida; Spencer Blair-Glantz, Travis Blair and Vanessa Blair-Glantz, all of Maine; Michael Glantz of Pennsylvania; Evan Glantz and Morgan Glantz of Virginia; Tyler Glantz and Matthew Glantz of Maryland; and Nathaniel Davis and Emmie Davis of North Carolina) and one great-grandchild (Eli Allen of Australia). She is also survived by a brother Donald Swope (Vonnie) of Williamsburg, VA, three nephews and four nieces, and many beloved relatives in West Virginia.
Besides her parents and husband, she was predeceased by one sister, Sandra Dulin, in 2005.
Shirley was very strong proponent of education. She initially earned a Registered Nurse degree but returned to college later to finish both a Bachelor's degree, and then a Master's degree from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania. She also made sure each of her six children completed a college degree.
She was proud of her faith as a Christian, being a long-time member of both the Church of Christ in Ridgway PA and the Hershey Free Church in Hershey, PA.
Shirley had a lifelong career as a nurse, working full time even while raising her six children and working into her 80s. Her service included long terms as a hospital nurse (both maternity and psychiatric), as a Public Health (community) nurse, a Physician’s office nurse, and as a school nurse, which included service at Milton Hershey School. She was very proud of her service in the U.S. Cadet Nurse Corps.
Shirley made many friends in her three primary places of residence: Ridgway, PA, where she raised her family while building an exemplary nursing career; Hershey, PA, where she continued her nursing work and remodeled her new home; and in Raleigh, NC, where she continued to live independently.
A celebration of her life will be held at a later date in Hershey, Pennsylvania. In lieu of flowers, donations are encouraged to your local Hospice organization, or to your favorite church or charity.
