Sherry Tove, born January 31, 1925, the world’s greatest unsung hero, passed away on May 12, 2016. A leader for Women in Science, she graduated from Cornell University, then earned her PH.D in Microbiology at University of Wisconsin. She married Sam Tove in 1945 and later moved to Raleigh. Following a career as Biology Professor at Shaw University, she headed the biological resource division of the Army Research Office for a third of a century and retained a position as an adjunct faculty member at NCSU. She was a founder of the Raleigh Preschool, member of the NC Panel of American Women, and leading promoter of NCSU’s long-running concert program “Friends of the College.”
A devoted spouse of 49 years, loving mother and doting grandmother, she never missed an opportunity to go out of her way for her family and considered it a privilege. During the good times, of which there were many, she was a beacon of light on everyone she touched. During adversity, she was a champion of defying the odds. She is survived by her three children, Michael, Nancy, and Debbie; their spouses Mira, Tom and Russ and her 6 grandchildren, Sammy, Elizabeth, Aaron, Rachel, Katherine and Stephen.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2:15 pm at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home 300 Saint Mary’s St. Raleigh, NC 27605.
