Shannon Marie Core, daughter of the late, Florence M. Mallonee Philson and Lowell E. Philson, was born November 21, 1932, in Harlan, Iowa. She died peacefully in her home on Friday, September 22, 2023.
Mrs. Core attended Jackson #4 country school in Shelby County, IA and graduated from Harlan High School. She attended Jennie Edmundson Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Council Bluffs, Iowa and graduated in September 1953. Mrs. Core practiced her profession as a Registered Nurse in an assistant supervisory position on a medical-surgical floor at Jennie Edmundson Memorial Hospital.
On January 15, 1955, she married Glenn E. Core in the Congregational Church in Harlan, Iowa. They resided in Council Bluffs, Iowa, Bloomington, MN and Raleigh, N.C. Mrs. Core was an active and involved member of Community United Church of Christ and was an enthusiastic volunteer in several community programs for many years.
Shannon was preceded in death by her parents and an infant brother, Arthur E. Philson. She was also preceded by her husband, Glenn Core; grandson, Kirby Core; and sisters, her twin, Shari Sickbert and Bonnie Jean Jenson.
Survivors include her son, Thomas E. Core and wife Kathy of Wake Forest, N.C.; daughter, Priscilla M. Miner and partner, David Winkler of Phoenix, AZ; 2 grandsons, Michael and Allen Miner; and also 3 great-grandchildren, Georgia May Flickinger (Core), Jordyn Core Miner and Callie Core Miner.
A memorial service will be held at the Community United Church of Christ, 814 Dixie Trail, Raleigh, N.C., date and times to be determined.
