Kay was born in Affinity, West Virginia on April 5, 1938, to Regnal Foglesong Allen and Lula Beatrice Suiter Allen and grew up in Sophia, WVA. She was a little sister to Carl, Patrick, and Norma, and a big sis to Gary and Rickie.
She graduated co-valedictorian from Sophia High School in 1956 and achieved summa cum laude from Concord College in Athens, WVA in December 1959, majoring in elementary education. It was at Concord that she met her eventual husband, Harold Lusk of Oceana, WVA.
What began with giving Harold extra milks in the cafeteria blossomed into more than 63 years of beautiful marriage and family life. Kay and Harold started their lives together in Salem, Va. -- she asked him to marry her -- where Kay worked as an elementary school teacher. The young couple eventually moved to Windsor Locks, Connecticut, and then to Raleigh in 1968.
Kay spent several years as a stay-at-home mom and then went back to work in the mortgage and finance industry. In her free time, she loved trips to the beach and collecting shells. She swung a mean tennis racquet. She always had a pencil and crossword puzzle at the ready, and especially appreciated the challenge of working the New York Times crossword on Sundays.
Kay was a master in the kitchen, especially with desserts, but don’t ask her for a recipe! She created most dishes from the top of her head and always added her own special touch (add peanut butter to taste).
Upon moving to Raleigh, Kay and Harold adopted NC State as their new favorite team. They attended most Wolfpack football home games for more than 50 years, including several bowl games. Kay made every NC State game an event, starting with the tailgate picnic three or more hours before kickoff and rooting hard for the Pack whether they went 3-8 or 8-3.
She correctly predicted the Wolfpack’s 1983 national basketball championship before the tournament started and had plenty of superstitions that all family members had to follow during games.
Kay turned her house into a Winter Wonderland at Christmas time with decorations in every corner. She loved to entertain, play cards and games, work in her garden, and create all sorts of arts and crafts. Her heart was with helping others – family, friends, and strangers alike – and she spent many years involved with North Raleigh Ministries.
Kay is survived by her husband, Harold; two children, Leslie Lynch (Danny) and Eric Lusk (Pamela) and five beloved grandchildren: Cameron, Hannah, and Ryan Lynch; and Samantha and Alison Lusk.
Kay was preceded in death by her parents, Regnal and Lula Allen, and brothers Carl, Patrick, and Ricky Allen.
