Robert Henry Garrison, Jr. died Monday, August 25, 2014. He was 94 years old. Bob was the son of the late Robert Henry Garrison and Roslie Pope Garrison of Raleigh, NC. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 54 years, Martha Dowell Garrison, by two brothers, Erskine Pope Garrison and John William Garrison, and by two sisters-in-law, Ruthanne Garrison and Nancy Garrison.
He attended Broughton High School, Mars Hill College, and NC State University. During World War II he served as a Pharmacy Technician in the U.S. Army stationed at the 53rd General Army Hospital, Malvern, England. After his discharge, Bob found his calling in church business administration. He worked in that capacity at Edenton Street United Methodist Church and Hayes Barton United Methodist Church for his decades-long career.
He was active in the church, serving as a Diaconal Minister, Finance Committee member, Cameron Class teacher, MYF youth advisor, telephone volunteer, usher, and many other jobs. Bob along with his wife Martha, and then later with son Richard, were longtime volunteers for Meals On Wheels of Raleigh.
Bob is survived by his sister Mary Eugenia Wood and husband Bob, of Indianapolis; his daughter, Susan Garrison Ridenour and husband, Bill, of Greensboro; his son, Robert H. Garrison III and wife, Jo Frances, of Raleigh; his son, Richard Dowell Garrison and wife, Van, also of Raleigh; his 4 grandchildren, Will Ridenour of Chapel Hill; Jon Ridenour of Stockholm, Sweden; Mack Garrison of Raleigh; Anna Garrison of Boone, NC; and his great-grandson Arwin Ekenberger of Stockholm, Sweden.
The family greatly appreciates the support of Henrietta Badjan, Ben McCarthy, Rachel Wilson, Julius, Charles, Anthony Bostic, Rufus, Aliou, Amanda, Michael, Sarah Kadate, and many others.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, September 2, 2014 at 3pm at Hayes Barton United Methodist Church, Raleigh. The family will receive friends at the church following the service. Arrangements are by Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 300 Saint Mary's St. Raleigh, NC.
Private internment will occur later at Oakwood Cemetery in Raleigh.
