Rebecca Davis Williams Long Hobgood, 92, died July 2, 2012. An eighth generation Raleigh native, she was born August 29, 1919 as the daughter of Warrenton, NC native Walker Anderson Williams and Isabella Willis Pescud of Raleigh.
She was a graduate of Peace Institute, Saint Mary’s College, and Randolph-Macon Woman’s College. Active in the arts and in the community, she was president of the Junior League of Raleigh and a long serving board member of the North Carolina State Art Society of the North Carolina Museum of Art.
She was a life member of Christ Episcopal Church in Raleigh, a 37-year parishoner at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Smithfield, and a summer parishioner at St. Francis By The Sea Episcopal Church on Bogue Banks.
She was predeceased by her first husband, Dr. William Lunsford Long, Jr., of Raleigh, and her second husband, Alfred Llewellyn Hobgood, Jr., of Smithfield; her brother, Peter Pescud Williams, of Raleigh, and her nephew, Peter Pescud Williams, Jr., of Raleigh. Mrs. Hobgood is survived by four children, The Hon. William Lunsford Long, III and his wife, Florence Johns Long, of Chapel Hill; Dr. Walker Anderson Long and his wife, Rose Harvin Long, of Raleigh; Tarlton Heath Long and his wife, Harriet Betts Long, of Charlotte; and Isabella (Belle) Pescud Long and her husband, Charles Harris Wesley Edwards, of Raleigh; her sister-in-law, Ruth Long Williams, of Raleigh; seven grandchildren, Rosa Arrington Heath Long Sledge and her husband, Robert Sledge, of Chapel Hill; Joshua Forrest Pescud Long and his wife, Boyd Anthony Long of Roanoke, Virginia; Dr. Millie Dascomb Long Barritt and her husband, Dr. Alfred Sidney Barritt, IV of Chapel Hill; Hadley Pirkko Long Fox and her husband, Richard Bayard Fox of Riverton, Wyoming; Lucy Fleming Long Doswell and her husband, James Benjamin Doswell of New York City; Tarlton Heath Long, Jr. of New York City and his fiancée, Teale Lawrence Clark of Locust Valley, NY; Charles Harris Long Edwards of Raleigh; and seven great-grandchildren, Henry Archer Sledge; Walker Anderson Long, II; Elizabeth Burwell Thorne Long; Heath Patterson Long; William Connor Barritt; Tyler Long Barritt; and Helen Emerson Barritt.
She is also survived by four step-children, Alfred Llewellyn Hobgood, III; Elizabeth Hobgood Wellons; Kenneth Edwards Hobgood; and Thomas Anderson Hobgood, and ten step grandchildren; four nieces and nephews, Rosa Beckwith Sands; James Payne Beckwith, Jr.; Isabella (Belle) Pescud Williams Smith; and Mason Long Williams, and seven great nieces and nephews.
Burial will be at 10 o’clock at Pescud Lot, Oakwood Cemetery on Monday July 9, 2012. A funeral service will immediately follow at 11 o’clock at Christ Episcopal Church, 120 E. Edenton Street, Raleigh NC.
