Born on August 30, 1943, in Baltimore, Maryland. At the age of three, Philip, known by his endearing nickname "PEE," moved to Richmond, VA, where his Taylor roots began. After attending William Fox for elementary school and Binford middle school, he graduated from John Marshall High School where he played in the John Marshall Corps band and his senior year was drum major. He continued his love for the marching band and was a member of Band Company at VMI, where after graduation he was inducted into the Kappa Alpha Order (Beta Commission). He continued being active in music and played in the Techniques jazz band in Smithfield, NC and played in the John Marshall High School alumni band in Richmond, VA, also serving as the band director for a year. He loved the power of music and enjoyed the friendships and memories he made while playing.
Philip leaves behind his beloved wife Susan and his sons: Stephen Taylor (Lovie), Jason Taylor (Allison), and Marshall Taylor. His grandchildren: Mary Love Mateas (Catalin), Anne Elliot, Edward, and Eliza.
In the tapestry of Philip's life, he was preceded in death by his mother Rena Benson Isbell Taylor and father Philip Ludwell Grymes Taylor.
Philip's journey was marked by a profound devotion to serving his country that began at The Virginia Military Institute. He exemplified honor and bravery during his military service in the Air Force from 1965 to 1973. His unwavering commitment to duty and sacrifice earned him the rank of Captain. Philip was a lifetime member of the DAV and American Legion where after his military service, Philip continued to embrace a life of helping other veterans. He extended his wisdom as a Financial Advisor for Raymond James in Smithfield, NC, and found solace in his role as a Vicar for the Free Episcopal Church. Through these endeavors, Philip touched the lives of many, offering guidance, support, and compassion.
Philip's spirit was enthusiastic studying and sharing his connection to his ancestry, as he diligently traced his roots. As he explored his family’s history, he recognized the interconnectedness of generations and the beauty of heritage. He also found joy in supporting his local community and was an avid fan of the Carolina Hurricanes. He loved watching his son, Marshall, play ice hockey in the RYHA while Marshall was in grade school all the way through high school. Moreover, his heart overflowed with compassion as he participated in the Kairos Prison Ministry, offering hope and spiritual guidance to those in need, especially those on death row. He also provided much needed spiritual care to those in addiction at the Day By Day Rehab Center in Selma, NC.
A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, December 10, 2023 at 2:00pm at Marsh Swamp Free Will Baptist Church, 6664 Rock Ridge School Rd, Sims, NC 27880.
