He was born in New Canaan, Connecticut on February 14, 1940, the son of James and Agnes Dubay, the youngest of eight.
Peter was married to the love of his life, Jutta, whom he celebrated his 59th wedding anniversary with on November 27, 2024. He was fiercely devoted to her and fought long and hard to be with her as long as he could; they weathered every storm and every joy together, as a unified pair.
Prior to marriage, Peter served in the US Army. He was stationed in Berlin when the wall was being built. Serving as a communications specialist, he became fluent in German which would enable him later to converse with Jutta’s family who had immigrated from Germany in 1953 and only spoke German at home.
Spending his working years as Manager of Production Control in manufacturing and his early retirement years at Lowe’s Home Improvement, he lived for his family and faith. A fourth degree member of the Knights of Columbus, Peter spent many hours volunteering, serving and experiencing fellowship with the Knights, hosting many dinners with his family to raise money for charitable needs, working outreach, playing on the softball league and building community. As a founding member of St. Francis of Assisi, he believed in being part of the community and investing time as a lector and eucharist minister. Peter and Jutta also spent many Sunday afternoons counting money from the offertories and ensuring that their family never missed a weekly service even while on vacation.
With an out-going and engaging personality, Peter never met a stranger. He loved nothing more than to sit and listen to your response when asked “What’s new or how are you?” Peter and Jutta enjoyed traveling together with family and friends. In addition to the annual family trip to the Outer Banks, they enjoyed numerous trips to the mountains. For their 25th anniversary, they traveled all over Europe visiting Spain, Morocco, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Belgium with close friends.
Peter was preceded in death by his parents and all seven of his siblings – the last of his generation. In addition to Jutta, Peter is survived by his children, Trinette Ray of Apex, NC; Danielle Quinn (Mark) of Raleigh, NC; Nicole Magers (Jay) of Cary, NC; Derek Dubay (Becky) of New Bern, NC; his brother-in-law, Franc Oberhammer of Fort Collins, Colorado; and sister-in-law, Iwona Dubay of Manchester, New Hampshire along with many nieces and nephews.
Peter loved his 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren - Alexa, Ansleigh, Lilly, James, Elyse, Mitchell, Johnny, Ben, Samantha, Charlotte, Grace, Myles and Ethan. He would never miss an opportunity to spend time with them and loved when they came to visit - his face would immediately light up. His pride was evident whether it was listening to one of their accomplishments, hearing a funny story, or imparting words of wisdom. He will be greatly missed and forever remembered as the best Opa ever.
A celebration of life will take place on Friday, January 3, 2025, at 11:00am at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Raleigh at 11401 Leesville Road. Interment in the columbarium will follow the funeral mass.
