Patricia Ann Sherrod Myers, known to her husband Rob and friends as Trisha, passed away peacefully at home in Raleigh, NC on 19-May-2023. Her two daughters, Rachel and Sarah, and her husband Rob were by her side. Her angel of a pup, Smidge, cuddled next to her to the end and beyond. Trisha had just turned 75 on May 9th. Trisha lost her life to aggressive pancreatic cancer; from the time of her diagnosis to her death was seven short weeks. Near her end, Trisha was in hospice care with Transitions Lifecare. The care the nurses and nursing assistant gave Trisha to make her comfortable and to prepare the family for Trisha’s passing was invaluable.
Trisha was born in Savannah, GA, on May 9, 1948, to loving parents Jack Patterson (Pat) Sherrod (deceased) and Marjorie (Pie) Nash Sherrod (deceased). Her brothers, Bill Sherrod, John Sherrod, and Jack Sherrod, feel the loss of their older sister.
Trisha’s husband Rob and children, Dan Myers, Sarah Myers and Rachel Myers, have holes in their hearts that will remain forever, but also sweet memories to comfort them. Her two mixed rescue dogs, Bertie and Smidge, feel the loss of her warm presence and head scratches.
Trisha was an avid reader who loved a well-written book. She mainly read fiction and leaned toward mysteries. Trisha had an abiding love of good language and literature. Precision in language and writing was important to her; she was a master of the Oxford comma. For Trisha, French was the most beautiful spoken language.
Trisha’s mother Pie was an excellent cook and baked the most delicious cakes. Early on Trisha was determined to master the art of cake baking. It took a number of tries using the creaming method to meet her high standards of fine crumb and wonderful taste. Our whole family over the years has enjoyed the birthday, holiday, and any day cakes that Trisha made; love was the most important ingredient.
Trisha was touched by the plight of rescued dogs and cats; those most mistreated nearly broke her heart. At one time, the family had eight rescued cats in the house. Later she adopted two rescue terrier mixes; Bertie from Saving Grace and Smidge from Chatham Animal Rescue and Education.
To Trisha’s mind, her children were her most important treasures. She was happy in their joys and accomplishments both as children and adults. She was always concerned about their happiness and had a mother’s worry when they struggled at times. They were all with Trisha during her short illness. The ways in which they helped Trisha returned back to her the deep love she had for them.
Trisha and Rob knew each other from Jenkins High School in Savannah. They started dating in the winter of 1965 and were married on March 16, 1969, after Trisha had completed her B.S. in education with a minor in French at the University of Georgia. The army sent Rob to Wurzburg, Germany and Trisha joined him there. They were in Germany for two years and traveled to a number of countries during that time. Paris was their favorite place to visit and Trisha got a chance to speak French, which she did very well.
After Rob’s time in the army, Trisha and Rob lived in Durham where he was at Duke graduate school. Following her love of books and learning, Trisha worked in the library at Duke. While in Durham, Trisha gave birth to Dan and two years later to Sarah.
After five years in Durham, the family moved to Paoli, PA. Trisha gave birth to Rachel there and through a play group made lifelong friends with some of the other parents.
The family moved to Raleigh in 1989. Trisha worked for 15 years as a preschool teacher teaching four-year-olds at St. Philip Lutheran Church. She loved the children and her co-teachers. They knew her as a dedicated, caring teacher and friend. Trisha treasured her time with them.
After preschool teaching ended, Trisha shared her love of good literature by co-founding a woman’s book club. The club is in its eighth year; the women in the club were some of Trisha’s dearest friends and will miss her greatly. They have been wonderfully supportive of Trisha and her family during this time.
Trisha and Rob were able to take some wonderful trips to visit their son Dan in Seattle. They visited Orcas Island and the Olympic Peninsula in WA, as well as Lake Louise and Vancouver in British Columbia, Canada. They also visited their daughter Sarah in New Orleans several times. New Orleans was a magical city to visit. Trisha loved walking the streets to look at the houses, riding the streetcar, and eating beignets.
Trisha joined Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church (PGUMC). After the COVID pandemic, Trisha worked with other church members to re-establish the Upper Room Sunday School class. The class has flourished and its members were devastated by Trisha’s sudden illness. Their prayers and support with meals, as well as those from her PGUMC family, comforted and helped her and her family during a very difficult time. Her Christian faith and assurance were a balm as her soul made its way into God’s loving arms.
Trisha and Rob lived in the Lakepark neighborhood for 34 years and made many close friends. During Trisha’s illness and afterwards, the family has been overwhelmed with their kindness and support.
There will be a memorial service celebrating Trisha’s life and the repose of Trisha’s soul in heaven reunited with her loved ones. The service, led by Pastor Jay Minnick, will be at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church on May 31, 2023, at 1 pm. Light refreshments will follow the service. PGUMC’s address is 4415 Pleasant Grove Church Rd, Raleigh, NC 27613.
