Odes Lawrence Stroupe, Jr. passed away peacefully at home on April 8, 2024. Born to Nancy Jones Stroupe and Odes Lawrence Stroupe on March 10, 1946, he grew up in Crossnore, in the Blue Ridge Mountains of NC. He graduated from Newland High School and North Carolina State University where he played Freshman basketball. He is also a graduate of UNC School of Law where he was on the Board of Editors of the North Carolina Law Review and graduated with honors.
In 1971, Odes began his legal practice with the Raleigh law firm of Joyner and Howison. His primary area of practice was litigation before the state and federal courts. He continued as a partner when Joyner and Howison merged with the multistate firm, Hunton and Williams in Richmond, Va. Odes received an AV rating from Martindale Hubbell with peer review for highest rating level of practice and was honored to be selected Permanent Member of the Judicial Conference for the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals. In the early 1990’s Odes became a partner of the Raleigh firm, Bode, Call and Stroupe, where he practiced until his retirement.
Always the loyal NCSU football and basketball supporter, he was thrilled with the Wolfpack making it to the Final Four this season. He was an accomplished outdoorsman whose favorite activities included duck hunting, saltwater fishing and boating. Odes had numerous close hunting and fishing buddies who enjoyed many adventures near and far over the years. However, his best friend, fishing, hunting buddy and “partner in crime” was Andrew. Odes’ favorite and maybe only comment about the decor of the renovated beach condo was “Where is the large photo of Andrew and me racing out to fish offshore?”
He found great joy in spending family time at the beach in Pine Knoll Shores and was happiest on his ocean front deck with a cigar in one hand and a scotch in the other.
Odes was a true gentleman and always interested in others. He faced many health challenges over the years with optimism, remarkable strength, courage and sense of humor.
Survivors are his devoted wife of 50 years, Lillian Pou Stroupe and son, Andrew Lawrence Stroupe (fiancé, Emily Weidrick) of Elizabeth City, NC. He is also survived by his sister, Nancy Stroupe Morrison of Crossnore, NC; sisters-in-law, Millie Pou Genet (John) of Morehead City N.C., Ihrie Pou O’Bryant of Raleigh N.C.; seven nephews, two nieces and many cousins.
A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, April 16, 2024, at 2:00 pm at Christ Episcopal Church, 120 East Edenton St. Raleigh, NC. A reception will follow the service at Christ Church. Burial will be private.
The family gives special thanks to our dear friend Shanna Jett Woodlief, who has provided loving and compassionate care to Odes over the last few years.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any memorials be sent to Christ Church and Transitions LifeCare.
