Our beloved mother, wife and “Nana” left this world gently and peacefully on May 26, 2021, to join her devoted Jay in what was surely the most joyful of reunions. She was born in Crewe, Virginia, the youngest of five sisters, and grew up on her family’s farm where she learned the lesson of hard work. She would later graduate from Longwood College and then obtain a Masters Degree from N.C. Central University. On October 15, 1961, she married Jay, the love of her life, and they would spend almost 58 years together before his death in September 2019. She spent her career teaching, for many years at Hardbarger Junior College of Business, and then at Wake Tech Community College until her retirement. But she was first and foremost a devoted wife and wonderful mother, unfailingly putting Jay’s and Brian’s interests ahead of her own.
Many will remember Nancy for her great love of cats and the particularly soft spot in her heart for homeless strays and rescued ones. More than one friend commented that, if there is reincarnation, they would like to return as one of Nancy’s cats. She volunteered her time and energy with an animal rescue organization and counted those efforts as some of her most rewarding. Over the years, she also volunteered at Brian’s school, at her church, and more recently with Meals on Wheels. After she and Jay spent several years covering separate meal delivery routes, each with a good friend, the two of them began delivering meals together, in what became a highlight of their week and a special time together.
Nancy is survived by her son Brian and his wife Teresa, grandsons Hunter and Collin, by two sisters, Frances Winall (the late William “Bill” Winall) and Juanita Yates (the late Charles “Jack” Yates, III), and by her nephews and other extended family and friends.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Jay, by her parents Hiram and Essie Carter, and by two sisters, Margaret Francis (the late Paul Francis) and Phyllis Gallion (the late Charles Gallion).
Brian and Teresa would like to express their most sincere appreciation to the caring staff at Falls River Village, where Nancy lived for her final years and where she was lovingly cared for – along with her cat, Precious. During that time, and particularly during the long months of the pandemic lockdown, they were her family within the walls of her home there. In addition, during the time that Nancy lived there before Jay’s death, even though he did not live there, they looked out for him as if he was one of theirs. For all of that, Brian and Teresa are so grateful.
A private graveside service will be held at Raleigh Memorial Park on June 8, 2021, as Nancy is laid to rest beside Jay.
In lieu of flowers, Nancy would have undoubtedly preferred that donations be made to any animal rescue group, to Meals on Wheels, or to her church – North Raleigh United Methodist.
