Mitzi M. Setzer, 83, of Raleigh, passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2024. Mitzi was born Mildred Dyanick, March 27, 1941, in Luzerne, PA, to Mildred and Charles Dyanick, and was the oldest of 3 children. She graduated from Kingston High School and went on to pursue her college education, earning a B.A. degree in Fine Arts and a M.A. in Art Therapy. She attended St. Mary Antiochian Orthodox Church in Wilkes-Barre, PA, beginning in her youth and would later sing in the choir and teach Sunday School.
As a young woman, Mitzi participated in and won multiple beauty pageants. She went on to marry and have 4 children- Debbie, David, Dean, and Michael. She had a zest for life and was passionate about art, producing a wide variety of works including paintings, drawings, and sculptures. She also enjoyed dance and cooking. Mitzi moved to Raleigh with her youngest son, Michael, in the late 1980s, after her older children located there, and has lived there ever since. In recent years, she attended Hillyer Memorial Christian Church in Raleigh.
She was incredibly strong and resilient, battling Multiple Sclerosis (MS) throughout much of her adult life, losing her mobility, but never her spirit. She also battled and survived several serious health issues during her senior years. She was a resident of the Raleigh Rehabilitation Center, where she received kind care for many years.
Mitzi was preceded in death by her parents, Mildred and Charles Dyanick, and her brother, Charles Dyanick.
She is survived by her four children, Debbie Malta, David Malta (wife Dana), Dean Malta (wife Kristin), and Michael Setzer. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Samiah Malta, Ethan Malta, Daniel Malta and Nicole Malta, by her sister, Corrine Censulla, and by several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at Hillyer Memorial Christian Church, 718 Hillsborough St. Raleigh, NC at 3:00 pm on Saturday, Nov. 16th.
