Dr. Bowman was born in Ironton, Ohio, on November 11, 1942 to Louis Wellman Bowman and Ruth Higgins Bowman. Dr. Bowman graduated from Ironton High School in 1960, after which he attended Ohio University, achieving Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees. He then relocated to Columbus, Ohio, attending The Ohio State University where he earned Ph.D and M.D. (with honor) degrees. Upon graduation, he received the outstanding graduating student award. He also was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, The Society of The Sigma Xi, The Landacre Society for medical research and was given the Watman, Upjohn, and Nu Sigma Nu awards for academic excellence. With his family, he then moved to Durham, North Carolina, where he further trained at Duke University Medical Center. After internship, residency, and fellowship, he became a member of the Duke faculty and the Private Diagnostic Clinic. In 1989, he and his family relocated to Raleigh, North Carolina where he joined Raleigh Neurology Clinic and practiced there for the next 35 years. During his career, Dr. Bowman intermittently found time to also practice Emergency Medicine.
Dr. Bowman was a member and chaired committees in Neurology and Emergency Medicine at both state and national levels. He became a fellow of the American Academy of Neurology, a member of The American Medical Association, The American Association of Electromyography and Electrodiagnosis, The American Association of Electrodiagnostic Medicine, The North Carolina Medical Society, The Wake County Medical Society, and The North Carolina Neurological Society. Dr. Bowman was the author of publications in neurology and emergency medicine as well as neurosurgery. Also, during his 47 years of medical practice he most cherished caring for his patients and being with his family. During his life, Dr. Bowman thoroughly enjoyed traveling with his family throughout the country and abroad, classical music, reading, collecting medical memorabilia, and supporting The Ohio State Buckeye football, and Duke Blue Devil Basketball programs.
Dr. Bowman is survived by his daughter, Erin Elizabeth Bowman, of Raleigh; his sister-in law, Phyllis Shafer; niece, Rita Townsend; and nephew, Michael Shafer, all of Ironton, Ohio.
In addition to his wife of 46 years, Dr. Bowman was preceded in death by his daughter, Shannon Michelle Bowman.
A funeral service for Dr. Bowman will be held on Tuesday, October 22, 2024 at 11:00am in the Chapel of Mitchell Funeral Home. Officiating will be Rev. Craig Gaither. Burial will take place in Woodland Cemetery in Ironton, Ohio, on Friday, October 25. The family will receive visitors Monday evening from 6:00 – 8:00 pm in the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Dr. William Ferrell, Dr. Thomas Perkins, Mike Shafer, Emmett Starnes, Jason Townsend, Jeffrey Townsend. Honorary Pallbearers will be Dr. Greg Bertics, Justin Bohaychuk, Dr. David Konanc, Dr. Wayne Massey, Cecil Townsend.
