Margaret Elizabeth Withers Craig, 90, passed away on Tuesday morning, January 3, 2017. She was born in Somerset, Kentucky on May 14, 1926, the daughter of John Tandy and Laura Ellen Dehart Withers. Her family included five older brothers, Hobart, Wilbur, Horace, Irvin and Ira. Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, her five brothers and her husband C.C. Craig. A joyous reunion is certainly already underway in heaven.
Margaret will be remembered as a loving mother, wife and friend. She adored her brothers and faithfully attended family reunions in Somerset as long as they were alive. Margaret was a gifted artist, accomplished seamstress, admired cook and consummate hostess. Her brother, Horace, owned a garage in her younger years, which probably explains why Margaret enjoyed watching Jeff Gordon in race car driving!
Margaret met her “to be” husband, C.C. Craig, in 1951 at a church box lunch event in Somerset, KY, where he outbid all others for the privilege of dining with this beautiful woman. They soon realized it was love at first sight, marrying 3 months later.
Margaret was a woman of faith who loved to read God’s word and listen to Christian music. After moving to Raleigh in 1960, the family began attending Highland United Methodist Church. Margaret loved her church, where she faithfully served and attended for over 40 years.
Margaret treasured her friends. They enjoyed monthly bridge games, dancing, taking trips together and laughing at parties. Margaret loved to laugh and her childlike giggles and mischievous smile were contagious.
Those left to cherish her memory are her son, John and wife Gail; daughter, Virginia; grandchildren, Laura and husband Mike, and Brian and wife Joelle; great granddaughters, Abby Elizabeth and Charlotte Grace and great grandson, Sawyer John; along with many nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation for Dr. Jim Parsons, as well as the staff of Brighton Gardens and Transitions LifeCare for their devoted care of Mom.
Graveside Services, officiated by Rev. Charlie Baber, will be held on Friday, January 13th, 2017 at 11 AM at Raleigh Memorial Park – 7501 Glenwood Avenue – Raleigh, NC.
The family requests that any gifts or donations be made in Margaret’s memory to Alzheimer’s research or to Highland United Methodist Church – 1901 Ridge Road – Raleigh, NC 27607.
