Lucille Wiley Hancock Barclay, 91, passed away peacefully on January 17, 2011 at Mayview Convalescent Center in Raleigh. Lucy was born in Franklin, Tennessee on December 7, 1919, the daughter of Maude and Fred Wiley. Throughout her life, she was a joyous and generous person and a loving wife and mother. As a devout Christian, she found her greatest happiness in helping others.
Lucy loved life, her family and her countless friends. She was a member and leader of Hawthorne Lane Methodist Church in Charlotte and President of the Charlotte Junior Woman’s Club. She worked for most of her life in several demanding administrative and sales positions, but most of her energy and all of her love were was focused on her family.
Lucy was predeceased by her mother and father, her brother Everett, and her first husband, William G. (Gerry) Hancock, Sr. of Charlotte, and her second husband, George T. Barclay of Chapel Hill. She is survived by two sons, William G. (Gerry) Hancock, Jr. and daughter-in-law Hope Hancock of Raleigh and Steven Thomas Hancock of Charlotte, and her sister Virginia Clarkson of Florence, South Carolina, and grandchildren Drew G. Hancock and wife Staci, Abigail P. Carter and husband Christopher, and great-grandchildren Kaylee Hancock and Madison Carter, all of Loganville, Georgia, and nieces Gail Jeffords and husband Van of Florence, South Carolina and Ann Clarkson of Benicia, California, and nephew Bob Clarkson and wife Bette of Rock Hill, South Carolina, and her cousin Lyn Sutterlin and husband Frank W. Sutterlin of Charlotte.
Lucy’s last years were greatly enriched by the outstanding staff and administration of Mayview Convalescent Center in Raleigh and The Pines of Goldsboro. The family is deeply grateful for these wonderful people who work tirelessly to enrich the lives of all the residents in their care. .
The family will receive visitors at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 300 St. Mary’s Street, Raleigh, North Carolina on Thursday, January 20, from 6 pm to 8 pm. The family will hold a private graveside service in Charlotte on Saturday, January 22.
