Kathleen Patricia Dougan, aged 80, died peacefully on June 12, 2015 at her home in Raleigh, North Carolina, after a struggle with cancer. Kathleen was born March 23, 1935 in Fermoy, County Cork, Ireland, the daughter of John Joseph and Mary Elizabeth Browne. She moved to the United States in 1956 and in 1962, she married the love of her life, James M. Dougan. Together they raised two children, Mary Elizabeth Adamik of Apex, NC, and James P. Dougan, of Washington, DC, and have been blessed with two grandchildren, Elizabeth Adamik Gallagher of Hamden, CT and Rebecca Adamik of Charlotte, NC.
The care and education of children was a lifelong passion for Kathleen, and for many years, she taught nursery school and Sunday school. Kathleen was also active in her churches at St. Joseph’s, Millbrook, NY and St. Francis, Raleigh, NC. Her church activities included special attention to the sick, poor, and others in need, and she was a devoted volunteer at Catholic Parish Outreach, Raleigh. Kathleen loved to cook and bake, and it was a generally accepted fact that she made the world’s best brownies, Irish sodabread, empire biscuits, and lasagna. She also enjoyed sewing and reading the novels of Maeve Binchy.
Kathleen is survived by her sister, Bernadette Moloney of Dungarvan, County Waterford, Ireland, her husband, son and daughter, and two grandchildren, and many beloved friends and extended family members.
The memorial service will be held at St. Francis Catholic Church, Raleigh, NC on Thursday, June 18, 2015 at 1:00 pm. The family will receive guests in the Founders Hall immediately following.
