Dr. Julie Gegner McVay, 96, ended her life journey on August 9, 2021. She was the eldest of three daughters born to John and Julie Gegner in New York City. Julie graduated from Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio and earned a Doctor of Education degree from North Carolina State University. She was a beloved mathematics instructor and faculty member in the Department of Counselor Education at North Carolina State University. Julie's husband, Dr. Francis E. McVay, taught statistics at N.C. State University and predeceased her in 1988.
Julie was an active supporter of the arts and the Roman Catholic Diocese of Raleigh. She was a lover of music and was an accomplished pianist. Julie was generous with her time and money, supporting causes which impacted the lives of many. In 2002, Julie was awarded the Benemerenti Papal Medal of Honor by Pope John Paul II for her lifetime contributions to the Catholic church and mankind. Julie was known by her friends and community for her quiet and generous acts of kindness.
Julie is survived by two sisters, Louise Feist of Arroyo Grande, CA and Gertrude 'Trudy' Learman and husband David Learman of Greensboro, NC; her nephews, John Learman, Keith Learman, Mark Learman, Barney Feist, Curtis Feist, and John Feist; and her many great nephews and great nieces.
A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 14, 2021 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church with Monsignor Jeffrey A. Ingham presiding. The service will be livestreamed through the following link; www.youtube.com/channel/UCLrKFPC6gVK2GBAGoNP4WyA
