Joseph Cecil Terry, 80, passed away on January 11, 2021 after a multi-year stretch of declining health. Born on April 10, 1940 in Wake County; he was the son of the late Julian Carr Terry and Mary Chappell Terry.
In his early life, “Joe”, worked hard to ensure his family was provided for. He began a career with the State of North Carolina at just 16 years old and later retired with 30 years of service. He focused on family and made time to teach his children all of life’s important lessons. He cared for his late wife, Loretta, until her passing in 1997.
During his years of work, Joe made friends with all he met. He never met a stranger and was known for his outgoing personality and truthful nature. Retiring at the early age of 46, Joe was able to put focus on family and enjoying his many hobbies. He was a long-time member of the Six Forks Fire and Rescue Squad and completed multiple stents of service as Chief. A member of the Masonic Lodge 745, Joe was always quick to help anyone in need.
He married Donnis Allen in August of 1998 and the two lived in Benson throughout their marriage. They were members of Pleasant Hill Christian Church in Benson, NC, and loved their church family dearly.
He is survived by his wife, Donnis Maples Allen of Benson; by his sons, Marty Terry and wife Dawne of Raleigh, Jarrett Terry of Benson; Grandchildren: Curtis Heinsohn and wife Shannon of Raleigh, Jayde Terry of Raleigh, Ashlyn Beasley and husband Trevor of Cary, Jansen Terry of Sanford, Jake Terry of Raleigh; one great-granddaughter, Madeline McDonald of Raleigh, as well as siblings Wallace Terry of Raleigh and Becky Smith of Cleveland, NC.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Lorretta Terry in 1997, and by siblings Clyde, Dorothy, William, and Frank.
Joe will forever be remembered for his infectious laugh, kind smile, and witty sense of humor. Pangs of sadness are felt today, but we rejoice knowing that he is celebrating a reunion with his wife and family gone before while in the presence of our Savior. Joe loved Jesus, so we find peace knowing that he is no longer in pain and can rest eternally until we are together again.
A Celebration of Joe’s Life will be held on Tuesday, January 19th, 2021 at 2 pm at Mitchell Funeral Home. Family and closest friends are encouraged to attend.
