John was born in Winston-Salem, N.C. on May 10, 1968 to Bonnie M. and Joseph B. Dempster. After graduating from Forsyth Country Day School, he received his B.A. in Economics from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Following a career in banking, John earned his Masters Degree in Computer Science Engineering from N. C. State University. From there, John embarked on a distinguished career in computer architecture and analytics, working for several well-known local, national and international companies, most recently as Group Manager, Analytics Architecture with Avanade, an international consulting firm.
John was also very engaged with his community. John was involved with Troup 395 of the Occoneechee Council of the Boy Scouts of America, serving as Committee Chair and dedicated father and volunteer. He was also a faithful member of St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, where he served on the Vestry, as a member of the Board of Directors of the Day School, as Head Usher, and as general servant-volunteer for any and all other jobs that needed doing.
More than anything else, John was a devoted family man and trusted friend to many. John’s family and his friends always came first. He was the first person to help, and the last friend you would ever need.
In addition to his parents, John leaves behind his wife, Lyne Hoskins Dempster and two children, John Hampton Dempster, Jr. (“Hamp”) and Virginia Lyne Dempster (“Ginny”). His family was the true love of his life and he was so proud of them and everything they did. John is also survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Joseph B. Dempster, Jr. and Elizabeth J. Dempster and their children, Joseph, III (“Jack”) and Kathryn (“Kate”); by his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Sarah H. Boone and Alex Boone and their children, Sarah P. Boone (“Sallie”) and Hayden A. Boone; and by his mother and father-in-law, Anne W. and William Hoskins. John also leaves behind an army of good friends who will miss him terribly.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, May 14 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church. A visitation will follow in the church parish hall.
At John’s request and in lieu of flowers, a remembrance may be made in his name to St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, 1520 Canterbury Rd., Raleigh, NC 27608.
