Dr. John Thomas Ambrose passed away on January 8, 2015 at age 70. Born in New York City, NY on August 28, 1944. Dr. Ambrose received his graduate education at Cornell University where he received his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in 1973 and 1975, respectively, both in Entomology. In 1975, Dr. Ambrose joined the faculty of the Department of Entomology in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at North Carolina State University. Dr. Ambrose received numerous teaching awards and was a member of the NCSU Academy of Outstanding Teachers and a recipient of the Alumni Distinguished Undergraduate Professor Award. He received the N.C. State Beekeepers Association’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 1995. One of his prouder accomplishments was chairing the NC State Beekeepers Association’s Zoo Committee which raised over $275,000 to create the Honey Bee Exhibit at the NC Zoo.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Josephine Romanow and John Francis Ambrose. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy and retired as a captain in 1994.
Services and celebratory wake will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Friday at the Carol Johnson Clubhouse on NC State’s Centennial Campus (1509 Main Campus Drive, Raleigh, NC 27606). Family will receive friends on Thursday, January 15, 2015 at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 1701 E. Millbrook Rd., Raleigh from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.
He is survived by wife Judith Ambrose, daughter Caroline Ambrose, son Zach Ambrose, Zach’s wife Jill Wright, grandchildren, Catherine and John Ambrose.
The family is thankful for the kind and caring people at Rex, the Duke Brain Tumor Center and the American Cancer Society. The family requests that memorial contributions be made in his memory to Alliance of Disability Advocates, P.O. Box 12988, Raleigh, N.C. 27605, Veterans Charity of choice, or NCSU Apiculture Science Fund.
