Janet Weir Null

Janet Weir Null, 96, a loving wife, mother and grandmother, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on September 25 at Springmoor Retirement Community in Raleigh, NC. She was born to Frank Wilmer and Ethel Weir on April 17, 1921 on a farm in Ivyland, Bucks County, Pa., the fourth of six children. Janet was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Frank Whitey Null .

She skipped a grade in her one room school house and graduated a year early in 1938 as valedictorian of her class at Richboro High School. She went on to graduate from West Chester State Teachers College with a B.S. degree in Elementary Education with graduate classes at Duke University. During college, she worked as a live in nanny and cared for the toddler son of the college president in exchange for room and board. She briefly taught elementary school before serving 19 months in the WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service/Navy) in the Fleet Records Office in San Francisco during World War II.

She retired from the National Bank of North America after working for 15 years in the small business loan department.

Janet volunteered with children’s ministry and was a leader for Pioneer Girls. After moving to Raleigh in 1992 to be near family, she and Whitey attended Providence Baptist Church with her daughter’s family. For many years she enjoyed sending the greeting cards to her Senior Adult Sunday School class.

She will be dearly missed by daughters Donna Basinger (Jim) of Leesburg, Va, and Vickie Goeking (Gordon) of Raleigh and six grandchildren: Charles Basinger of Birmingham, MI, Peter Basinger of Durango, CO, Hope Basinger of Anchorage, AK, Jennifer Goeking of Cary, NC, Janet (Will) Click of Wheaton, IL, Jacquie Goeking of Raleigh; and by three great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in the Springmoor Auditorium, 1500 Sawmill Drive, Raleigh with a graveside service following at 4:00 at Raleigh Memorial Park, 7501 Glenwood Avenue.
