Our dear sweet mother, Jane Lassiter Freeman, age 93, passed away on March 3rd, 2021 at home in Raleigh surrounded by her family. Born in Raleigh, Jane was the daughter of Otha and Katie Lassiter. As a teenager, Jane worked at her father’s lumber company at Lassiter Mill. Jane graduated from Broughton High School and Meredith College, where she majored in English and edited the school newspaper. After graduation, she worked for the N.C. Bankers Association as an assistant editor of the Tarheel Banker and later managed the N.C. Travel Bureau.
In 1952, Jane married George K. Freeman, Jr. and moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts where George attended Harvard Law School. While at Cambridge, Jane worked at Harvard University’s Widener Library. After George’s graduation they moved to Goldsboro, North Carolina and raised a family. Jane worked as a real estate broker and later operated her own real estate company.
Jane was active in the community, working with the Goldsboro Symphony Association, the Goldsboro Ballet Association, the Goldsboro Gardening Club and the Wayne County Bar Auxiliary. In 1992, Jane and George moved to Wilmington, N.C. Jane continued serving the community by chairing the Alexis de Tocqueville Society with the Cape Fear Area United Way and was the fund raising chair for the Northeast Library Action Committee, helping create the Northeast Regional Public Library and Community Center.
Jane was a devoted wife and mother with a kind, gentle, and generous spirit.
Jane was predeceased by her eldest son George K. Freeman, III and her husband George K. Freeman, Jr. She is survived by her daughter Gail and sons Thomas and James and his wife Cyndi Harvard.
