Jim grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Cleveland, Ohio and attended the public schools of his hometowns. After high school, he attended Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio. There, Jim was a member of the Sigma Nu fraternity. As he would throughout his life, Jim made great friends in college, with lots of stories as evidence of the fun he and his buddies had. After graduating from Bowling Green with a degree in teaching, he opted to pursue a career in business and sales, beginning his career with Mead Paper Company.
His career in sales took Jim to Raleigh, North Carolina in 1992, where he would make his home for the rest of his life. Jim enjoyed much success in his career, working for several companies, including Cintas Corporation, TriNet, Insperity and Blanton’s Air, Plumbing and Electric. Jim’s work at Blanton’s was his favorite part of his career. As was the case throughout his career, Jim considered his colleagues at Blanton’s as part of his family.
Nothing, however, took precedence over Jim’s family life. Jim’s children were his biggest source of joy and pride. He immersed himself into the lives and activities of his children. He was always involved in their Y-Guides and Y-Princesses activities, he was a Sunday School teacher during their early years, and he coached their sports teams as they were growing up. Jim represented so well all that a father could be with his usual abundance of dignity, grace, generosity and gentleness.
Jim is survived by his three children, James Thomas Montgomery III, Jackson Caldwell Montgomery and Margaret Elise Montgomery. Jim is also survived by his former wife and mother of his children, Terree T. Montgomery. Also surviving Jim are his mother, Teresa T. Montgomery, his brother Scott E. Montgomery and his sister, Debbie A. DeWitt (Steve) and their son, Hank and his aunt, Virginia Rosario-Caldwell. Jim was predeceased in death by his father, James T. Montgomery, Sr.
A Witness to the Resurrection service for Jim will be held at White Memorial Presbyterian Church at 3:00 pm on Wednesday, December 14, 2022. A reception will follow in the Jane Bell Gathering Space.
