Mr. Holt graduated from Needham Broughton High School in 1938, where he was known as the “Blonde Flash” to his class and the baseball team. He later graduated from Oak Ridge Military Academy in 1941.
He then started working for the Seaboard Airline Railroad, starting out as a clerk, then fireman and later promoted to locomotive engineer in 1944. He served as local chairman of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers for several years. He retired from Seaboard Coastline Railroad in 1981.
Mr. Holt was preceded in death in 2007 by the love of his life, Grace Liles Holt and by a sister and brother.
Surviving are his two children; daughter, Connie Holt Jones of Garner, and son, Samuel Robert Holt and wife Jan Duncan Holt of Raleigh; three grandchildren, Michelle Marie Hickman, Renee’ Allyson Esmond and Joshua Edwards Holt; two great granddaughters, Amber Renee’ Ackley and Channing Grace Law. Mr. Holt is also survived by his sister, Lillian East of Raleigh, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held Thursday, January 21, 2016 at 2:00 P.M. at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 300 St. Mary’s Street. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 1-2 P.M. Burial will be held at Raleigh Memorial Park.
