Ira Brantley Newton passed away at home on Monday, October 3, 2022 to rejoin his wife of 54 years, Susanne, who preceded him in death in July 2021. He was born and lived in Raleigh, North Carolina all of his life. He graduated Needham B. Broughton High School in 1962 and NC Wesleyan College in 1975.
After growing up working at Newton’s, the family’s grocery store on Peace Street, he joined the United States Marine Corps in February 1966 and served for six years. In 1967, he joined the Raleigh Police Department, where he was honored and privileged to serve his home community, retiring with 30 years at the rank of Major.
In retirement, he dedicated his life to service and family.
Ira is survived by his sister, Brenda Newton; his brother, Early Newton; his brother-in-law, The Rev. Dr. Louis Murdock Smith and his wife Linda Smith; his three sons, Kenneth Scott Newton and his partner Kenann Bolton, Christopher Allen Newton and his partner Anne Marie Bradshaw, and Steven Kerr Newton and his wife Jennifer Safley Newton. He has four wonderful grandchildren, William Scott, Caitlyn Rene, Gabriel Allen, and Jackson Louis, and one great-grandchild, Clayson Ira William Grandt. He is also survived by numerous cousins and extended family that he deeply cherished.
A visitation will be held Sunday, October 9th from 3-5 pm at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 300 Saint Mary's St. Raleigh. A private entombment service will be held at Church of the Good Shepherd.
