on Sunday, April 14, 2013 at Southeastern Hospice House in Lumberton. He was
born in Wake County, NC on October 27,1924 to the late Herman Wolff, Sr. and
the late Anna Keyes Wolff.
Mr. Wolff is a 1941 graduate of Cathedral Latin High School (Cardinal Gibbons
High School) and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from Holy
Cross University in 1944. After serving in the United States Navy on a LST as an
Executive Officer during World War II, he studied accounting at the University of
North Carolina, Chapel Hill and in 1951 received an L.L.B from the Columbus
School of Law at the Catholic University in Washington, D.C.
After serving for the Secretary of Defense and as Assistant Regional Council for
the IRS in Atlanta, Georgia, Mr. Wolff entered private practice with the firm of
Poyner, Geraghty, Hartsfield and Townsend. In 1963 he entered private practice,
and later formed Wolff and Martin with Andrew S. Martin. Mr. Wolff was a
member of the North Carolina Bar for over 50 years. He was awarded the Order
of the Long Leaf Pine, the State's highest civilian honor, by Governor Robert W.
Scott. Mr. Wolff served in several professional associations, was a trustee at
Ravenscroft School, and generously supported the schools he attended.
Mr. Wolff was longtime parishioner of Sacred Heart Cathedral and was the first
male child baptized there. After moving to Lumberton in 2007, Mr. Wolff was a
parishioner of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, John and
Bill Wolff and three sisters, Agnes Jones, Margaret Marks and Dorita Nelli.
Mr. Wolff is survived by his wife, Carol W. Wolff of the home; two sons, Herman
Wolff III and wife, Carol of Portland, OR, and Jordan F.X. Wolff and wife,
Deborah of Poquoson, VA; three daughters, Bobbie Wolff, Mary Wolff Knight of
Raleigh, NC, Yates Wolff Balddacchino and husband, Gordon of Cherry Grove,
SC; one step-son, James W. Williams of New Church, VA; two step-daughters,
JoAnne W. Branch and husband, David of Lumberton, NC and Lynn W. Pierce
and husband, J. Perry of Birmingham, AL; a brother, Thomas Wolff of Allentown,
P A; eighteen grandchildren; five great -grandchildren and a host of nieces and
nephews.
A time of visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 17, 2013 from 6:00-8:00 PM
at Floyd Mortuary & Crematory, Inc., 809 East 5th Street, Lumberton.
A funeral service will be held Thursday, April 18, 2013 at 10:00 AM at
Sacred Heart Cathedral, 200 Hillsborough Street, Raleigh, NC 27603.
