Herb was born February 18, 1925 in Wilmington, NC to Emily and Herbert Cicero Davis, Sr. After graduating from New Hanover High School in 1943, Herb was drafted into the US Army and attended the ASTP program at the Citadel. He then served his country in WWII in Company E of the 398th infantry regiment of the 100th Division, receiving the Bronze Star for Heroic Achievement in Action. Herb remained involved with his fellow veterans of the 100th Infantry Division Association, and served as president in 1983. Herb was a graduate of North Carolina State University and was employed with the NC Department of Water and Environmental Resources retiring with over 25 years of service.
Herbert was preceded in death by his brother, Jimmy Davis.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Dicie Ward Davis; son, Herbert Cicero Davis III and his wife, Deborah; daughter, Dicie Drew Davis Malcolm and her husband, Steve; three grandchildren, Joshua Vick Davis and his wife, Brooke; James Ward Malcolm and his fiancé, Emily Creech; and Natalie Drew Malcolm.
A funeral service will be held 3:00 p.m. Thursday, April 14, 2011 at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home Chapel, 1701 E. Millbrook Road, Raleigh, NC 27609. Burial will follow the service at Raleigh Memorial Park. The family will receive friends 1:30-3:00 p.m. prior to the service.
