Helen McCreary Wood

Helen McCreary Wood, 90 died Friday, October 9, 2015 at The Cottage at Blakey Hall after a three-year battle with Alzheimer's disease. She was born January 5, 1925 in Mt. Airy, NC to the late Frank and Myrtle McCreary.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, October 14, 2015 from 10:00-11:00am, at Mitchell Funeral Home in Raleigh, NC with a graveside service at 11:30am at Raleigh Memorial Park.

Helen is survived by her sons Leonard, Jr. (Lanny) and his wife Lindy of Mt. Airy, NC; and Keith of Burlington, NC.

Her husband, Leonard Warren Wood to whom she was married for 59 years, precedes Helen in death. In addition to her husband, Helen is preceded in death by her father and mother, her brother, Sam of White Plains, NC; her sisters, Mary and Nina of Mt. Airy, NC and half-brothers Robert of Mt. Airy, NC and Billy of Galax, VA.

Helen retired from the NC Department of Education and pursued an active retirement of travel, various projects and caring for her husband before his passing. Recently, she was a resident of The Cottage at Blakey Hall in Elon, NC.
