He was born August 28, 1959, in Raleigh, NC the youngest son of 6 children to Archie and Fay Calhoun. With his Virgo mind, he graduated with an AAS EET from Wake Tech, a BS in Computer Engineering at UNC-Charlotte, and a Masters in Science in Computer Engineering at NC State University, graduating Summa Cum Laude. In 1981 he began his career as a computer engineer employed in RTP at IBM and 2015 he transitioned to Lenovo until 2019. He was known as George at school and work and as Mike by his family. Mike was an amazing loyal husband and father who raised a single child and two nephews. Those who knew him know he was the most gentle, kindest man with a great big infectious laugh.
To the many who were close to him, Mike was a very smart man who thought a lot and spoke little. He was a wise mumbler, who listened to people very carefully and he taught by example. Mike absolutely loved watching football with the volume on mute, and “Lord of the Rings” with the volume on high.
He was a master cook in the kitchen and was known for his grilling skills and smoking brisket for many friends and family in the backyard. Mike had a sharp sense of humor that was expressed with a loving wit. He enjoyed tinkering around, fixing old equipment and building things for others. Mike loved gardening and he loved growing all kinds of flowers and vegetables especially tomatoes, peppers and many varieties of jalapenos. His yard is filled with red crowned daffodils, which he loved watching bloom each spring. Most of all, nothing will replace the memories he made with his buddies at Bojangles on Tuesday’s.
Mr. Calhoun is survived by his wife, Kimberly Calhoun, whom he shared an amazing journey with for over 42 loving years; his child, Nicholas Conner Calhoun, of Raleigh; two nephews, Mark Futrell of Charlotte NC and Steve Futrell of Youngsville NC; and his oldest sister, Frances Schofield of Greensboro, NC. Mike is survived by many nieces and nephews who loved him very much.
Mike will be most remembered in our hearts for all the joyful laughs, for all the care he gave to everyone and every living thing, for all the wonderful lessons he taught each of us, for all the amazing food, for his most amazing brisket, bread and pizzas and most of all for his warm unconditional love he wrapped up in his big hugs.
You will be missed Michael. Raise your spirits to the sky, raise them to Michael Calhoun, God Bless you Mike and may we see you again. “So fill to me the parting glass, Good night and joy be with you all”.
A memorial service will be held at Mitchell Funeral Home on Glenwood Ave. Please contact family members for details if you are interested.
