Gary was born in Lambsburg, VA on November 23, 1932, one of 11 children to the late Charles Lloyd and Julia Mary Jarrell Lyons. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1952 to 1956 and that began his love for flying. Gary had a long-standing career as an Air Traffic Controller at RDU Airport, also working as an Air Transport Pilot. Gary lived a full, joyous life with his wife, family and friends. He enjoyed sports, especially golf, and his favorite saying, if everyone else is happy I’m happy!
He is survived by his daughter, Pamela Lyons Sheets and husband, Tony Sheets; his son, Tony Lyons and wife, Diane Lyons; and his son, Kenneth Lyons; his granddaughter, Janna Sheets Tart and husband, Nick Tart; his grandsons, Jay Sheets, Ethan Lyons and Cameron Lyons; his great granddaughter, Gracelyn Tart. He is also survived by his brother, Fred and wife Betty Lyons; his sister, Mary Lyons Parsons and his sister, Margaret Lyons and husband Lowell Layman. He is also survived by his sister-in-laws, Carol Brinkley and Peggy Ruth Austin.
He was predeceased by his wife, Evelyn Marie Sellers Lyons; his sisters, Lois Lyons and Arretta Norman; his brothers, Arwood Lyons, Lloyd Elmo Lyons, Dewey Lyons, Clancy Lyons, and Reavis Lyons.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, November 18th from 1:00 – 2:30pm at Raleigh Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel, 7501 Glenwood Avenue, Raleigh, NC 27612 and service will follow at 2:30pm with Rev. Trent Lyons. Entombment will follow the service in the Mausoleum at Raleigh Memorial Park. Reception will follow at Mitchell Funeral Home.
