He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Hyacinth Whonder, nee Williams. They were married in Kingston Jamaica on August 25, 1963.
Ernest, also fondly known as Carl, is loving remembered by his daughters (Dr. Hillary Whonder-Genus, Karen Whonder and Gail Whonder-Alexis), grandchildren (Timothy Whonder, Tyler Echevarria , Gabriela Jamison Whonder, Stephen Genus and Brendan Genus); great grandson Timothy Whonder Jr., brother Leslie Whonder and his sisters (Beverly Whonder and Caralee Robinson). Many other relatives, including his son-in-law, Devon and numerous nieces and nephews as well as countless friends and business acquaintances are left to remember his legacy.
Ernest was born in Kingston Jamaica, WI on July 30, 1935 but grew up in the parish of St. Elizabeth where he completed his early school years. He went on to earn an agricultural degree from Jamaica School of Agriculture and worked as a civil servant in the Department of Agriculture. When he emigrated to the United States in 1967, he worked at New York University while pursuing his advanced degrees. He earned a Masters in Business Administration from NYU and worked as an assistant comptroller for 25 years at New York Medical College until his retirement in 2000.
He enjoyed gardening immensely, and was very proud of both his flowers and vegetable gardens. Equally exciting to him was his work with the various Seventh-day Adventist churches he was associated with in New York and North Carolina. His work as youth leader and ordained elder was outstanding and many people will credit Ernest with helping them know God on a higher level.
