We have been next door neighbors with Ed and Alice since November 1989 and we were shocked to return from a vacation to find this sad news. We will miss our "over the fence" talks with Ed and just seeing him working in his yard. Ed was a kind, gentle man who always showed concern for us, in particular my husband's health. He always quietly took note of when my husband wasn't well and kept up with his recovery. We knew we could count on Ed for anything a neighbor could ever need. Now I can only hope that Alice will feel the same way about us. Our deepest sympathy to you, Alice, and Amy and her precious family.

Here is Ed at his desk waiting to go over to receive his Employee of the Year award for 1992. Behind him is a cage he made to confine Florida flower thrips (little bitty bugs). (The secretaries loved it when we worked with Florida flower thrips because they came in on orange blossoms that filled the whole room with fragrance.) In front of Ed is his amazing coffee cup with the one-cup heater dangling over the edge of the desk. What a great guy!

Here is a photo of Ed rating the efficacy of pesticides for azalea lace bug control in the 1980's. He seemed to enjoy working in nurseries.

Ed will be missed by many but none more than our two precious grandsons.  He made wonderful memories that will be with them forever.  It is a privilege to have Ed and Alice as part of our family.

I was fortunate to work with Ed for 10 years at NCSU. To illustrate his work habits, he won the outstanding NCSU Employee of the Year one year and was nominated several more times. Enough said. Ed was a fairly quiet person who preferred to work alone in the greenhouse and nursery off campus. As a retired engineer, he took pains to double and triple check his analyses of pesticide efficacy trials. He even found an error in one of the tables of a statistical analysis program that had been previously overlooked. Ed also was familiar with industrial hygiene and followed onerous safety guidelines scrupulously. We built a wind tunnel to rate air flow through various insect exclusion fabrics and he generated polynomial equations that described pressure drop across the screens at different velocities. Out of that work, Ed wrote a computer program combining pressure drop and fan velocities that allowed greenhouse designers to size screens for a dozen different fabrics. That program was used by greenhouse operators in Germany, France, Israel, Central America, and the US. 
Ed was a great example of a southern gentleman. He helped our graduate students with their projects by building cages and counting thrips (little bitty bugs). When he was on campus he was a welcome addition to the afternoon break crowd. Ed made my life at NCSU much easier. 

It was a shock to hear of his passing and I am very, very sorry for Alice, Amy, Jerry, Carson, and Dylan. You all lost a wonderful, fine man.

Edwin and I have a long history as first cousins...a lifetime of memories.  He was a gentle caring person...one who came to my aid on more than one occasion.  I will miss him greatly.  God bless Alice, Amy and the grandchildren he dearly loved.

Edwin had a great sense of humor. He always was the first cousin to make me laugh when I was younger. Though years separated us we always had fun together. He was smart, thoughtful, and full of surprises. He and my mom, his Aunt Dorothy, always had great tales to tell of the family and shared many gardening gems. He will be missed by many. He was a wonderful soul.

I have such fond memories of you and your parents when we were kids. Your dad was always picking beans from the plants along the back of the house in Maryland. I think it was the summer after you moved to NC, I came to visit and we spent time in Rocky Mount on the way back to bringing me home.  Every time my family drives to FL and we pass the exits for Rocky Mount, I think you all and that trip.  Those are times I will always treasure.  Sending love and peace to you, your Mom and family.

Ed was our neighbor and friend for almost 22 years - a kind, thoughtful man always ready to help, he also was our personal gardening reference and we shared his beautiful, grand fig tree on the property line between us. We will miss him sorely.  Our heart go out to Alice, Amy and their family in this time of sorrow and grief, and we know that his good memories will remain forever.
