A lifelong resident of North Carolina, she was a beautiful representative of the Greatest Generation who truly lived the American values of love, faith, kindness, hard work and service to others.
As a young girl after World War II, her family moved from Rutherford County to Tryon, NC, where she met and married the love of her life, Fred McKaig, a young sailor in the United States Navy. They were married for 72 years.
After having 3 children, the couple moved to Raleigh in 1963, where she lived until her passing. A devoted wife and mother, she also had a working career with Western Union and Nationwide Insurance, where she retired after 25 years.
She lived her Christian faith and always placed the needs of others above her own. Her humble, kind spirit, generosity and heart of a child seeking adventure were wonderful gifts to her family, all of whom adored her.
She loved the mountains of North Carolina, Christmas, picnics with her family, beautiful music, and classic films from Disney. Her favorite Television show was “ Everybody Loves Raymond.”
Edith is preceded in death by her parents, Mallie and Walter Roach and by her brother Bill and sister, Katherine.
She is survived by her husband, Jesse Fred McKaig and children: Steve McKaig (Sonya), Rosemary McKaig (Bob Hostetler), and Ben McKaig (Deborah). Grandchildren include: Ryan McKaig, Katie McKaig Parker (Tim), Lauren Jones, Erin Jones. Justin Hostetler, Bonnie Hostetler Walling ( Amanda), Caroline Hostetler, David McKaig, Scott McKaig (Katie) Maggie McKaig Vacquier (Paul), Great grandchildren include: Chance Hostetler, Lincoln Parker, London Parker, Jack McKaig, Liam McKaig, Aiden McKaig, Siena Vacquier, Finn Vacquier, and Margo Vacquier, her sister Dietra Roach Howard and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
