Doris was born in Swain County, NC, on October 17, 1931. She graduated from Thomasville High School and took several professional courses to advance her career.
Doris married Herbert Mason in 1950; they were married for 49 years before his death in 1999. Doris worked as a shipping clerk for Burlington Industries for 26 years before her retirement in 1976. She then became a legal secretary and the Administrative Assistant to Commissioner John C. Brooks of the N.C. Department of Labor and ultimately retired from state service in 1995. Doris was a proud servant of the citizens of North Carolina, taking great satisfaction from helping workers be safe in their work environment and fairly compensated for their efforts. She enjoyed traveling, helping her family and friends, and visiting family, friends, and her pets. Doris was also active in Forestville Baptist Church and, more recently, in Millbrook Baptist Church. She was active in the North Raleigh Optimers Club, enjoying their charitable work.
Doris is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth M. “Lacy” Maddox and her favorite son-in-law, Rodney S. Maddox of Raleigh. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Marina Maddox and husband, Dmitriy “Dima” Kobka; Cristina Maddox; and Maria Maddox and husband AiquocJohnson “AJ” Nguyen, as well as two great-granddaughters – Alympia and Lara. These children brought her much joy. Her daughter, granddaughters, and great-granddaughters all live in the Raleigh area. In addition, Doris is survived by her brother-in-law, Phillip W. Mason, and his wife Jean, of Tarpon Springs, FL. She is Aunt Doris to many cherished nieces and nephews, including her twin sister’s daughter, Tracy Sabol, of Boulder City, NV. She is also survived by a special cousin, Ernest Maney, of Pisgah Forest, NC.
Doris was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Mason, and her parents, Jesse V. and Etella W. Maney. Also preceding Doris in death are her brother Jack and her sisters Pauline, Margeaux, Mildred, and her twin sister Dorothy and their spouses; Herbert’s brothers, TH and Jerry, and his sisters, Ann, Louise, and Geraldine and their spouses. She was saddened by the passing of several of her and Herbert’s nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by other special family members and friends, including Rodney’s parents, Carter and Frances Keen Maddox.
The celebration of Doris’ life will be Friday, August 18, 2023, at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home at 1701 East Millbrook Rd, in Raleigh.
