David Warren Wilson

David W. Wilson, of Raleigh, NC (age 27,954,534.593 minutes) died at his home on Saturday, May 2, 2015 following an extended and difficult battle with NTM disease, an uncommon bacterial infection of the lungs.

Born March 2, 1962 in Oklahoma City at Saint Anthony’s Hospital (patron saint of the finders of lost things and lost people, just like David) he was the second son of Jack Wilson and Jen Bireline.

David came of age in Raleigh’s Cameron Park and attended N.B. Broughton High School under the tutelage of Herr Philip Watts, where he founded the student Inner Seal Society. After graduation in 1980, he attended NC State University earning a BA in Philosophy in 1986, and a Master of Arts in Creative Writing in 1989. David was a master of puzzles, riddles, competitive games, and all feats of hand-eye coordination.

He was a gifted poet and author of no less than five novels (yet to be published) and many short stories. He was quick with a joke, giant of heart and a keen observer of the human condition.

David was also a brilliant songwriter and musician. His music was infused with intellect and wit. As a bassist, guitarist, and singer he performed with at least a dozen groups for over 30 years and fronted his own band "The Orphans." He generously mentored aspiring musicians by hosting a weekly songwriters' workshop for several years.

David is survived by Raleigh family, Susan Crane and her children, Elizabeth and Teague; brother Brent Wilson; mother, Jen Bireline; step-siblings, Lise, Marek, Alex Bireline and Jack Andersen, and countless friends.

The family suggests memorial donations to The National Jewish Hospital in Denver, Colorado, or Warmth for Wake.

A celebration of David’s life is being organized for later this summer.
