Dan was born on July 31, 1933 in Live Oak, Florida to the late William F. and Chlothilde Mainer. He died peacefully at home surrounded by his family after a courageous battle with lung cancer.
His father ran telegraph offices over the southeast United States and he was frequently moving from one place to another. He went to Central High School in Charlotte, NC and was a star football player. He was recruited to play at UNC on a football scholarship from 1950 to 1954. He played defensive end and lettered in 1952.
After college, he went to OCS in Quantico, VA to enter the Marines at the end of the Korean War in the Philippines. Highest rank attained was First Lieutenant with assignment as Commanding Officer of a Field Artillery Battery.
He was a District Training Supervisor for the State of NC with American Oil Company. He became a pharmaceutical representative for Smith, Kline and French Laboratories. After that he joined the staff of the NC Medical Society first as a field representative and was promoted to the Assistant Executive Director. After that he headed up the Peer Review Foundation. He started a Homes and Land Magazine in Sanford, Southern Pines and Pinehurst and produced this for several years.
He was a Charter organizer of the Cary NC Booster’s Club and served as vice president. He coached Cary PeeWee Football programs and also coached baseball. He was an excellent photographer especially for his daughters’ soccer programs.
He is survived by his wife, Elaine Beard Mainer, of 36 years. He was predeceased by his first wife, Sybil Carson Mainer. He is also survived by his son, Van (Meg) Mainer, of Raleigh, NC; son, Ken Mainer, of Princeton, NC; daughter, Amy (Reggie) Griffin, of Holly Springs; daughter, Megan (Josh) Ferguson, of Morrisville; grandchildren, Allison Griffin, Daniel Jayden Griffin and Tyler Iverson Ferguson.
The family thanks the Cancer Center of NC and Dr. Berry for their compassionate care.
The family will receive friends on Friday, January 27th from 7-9 PM at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home (300 St. Mary’s Street), with a memorial service to be held on Saturday, January 28, 2012 at 11 AM in the Mausoleum Chapel of Raleigh Memorial Park.
