Dan Hugh Green, 87, of Raleigh, peacefully passed away with his two daughters at his side on July 12, 2010. Born May 7, 1923 in Raleigh, Dan grew up in Raleigh and graduated from Broughton High School in 1941. While a student at the North Carolina State University School of Engineering, Dan was drafted into the United States Army in 1943 and served his country with the 100th Division in the European Theater of World War II, receiving the Bronze Star for Heroic Achievement in Action.
Upon fulfilling his duties in the US Army in 1946, Dan returned to his wife Erma Holton Green, whom he had married just before deployment to France in 1944. In 1958 Dan cofounded Raleigh Paint and Wallpaper where he served as proprietor until his retirement in 1994.
A devoted member of Hillyer Memorial Christian Church, Dan served in every capacity and was appointed as a lifetime trustee of the church. Dan remained very involved with his fellow veterans of the 100th Infantry Division Association and was proudly serving as chaplain for the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10001.
The son of Blanche Poole Green and Daniel Bridgers Green, Dan was predeceased by his wife Erma Holton Green, who passed away in 2000. Dan is survived by his two sisters, Doris Green Brock and Nancy Green Hinton and husband, Andrew G. Hinton; two daughters, Caroline Green Stone and husband, James T. Stone of Raleigh, and Camille Green Thompson and husband, Dean G. Thompson of Hampstead; and his six grandchildren, Ralph B. Reeves, IV of Raleigh, Daniel M. Reeves and fiancée Jamie B. Arton of Raleigh, Holton S. Thompson of Durham and A. Boone Thompson of Evanston, IL. ; James T. Stone, Jr. and wife Christine S. Stone, Adrianne S. Wegner and husband David D. Wegner; one great grandson, Henry Ward Wegner.
The family would like to extend special thanks to his wonderful friends and neighbors, his church family at Hillyer Memorial, his veterans group, Hospice of Wake County and his devoted caregivers. Thank you for all of your love and support.
Memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM Thursday, July 15, 2010 at Hillyer Memorial Christian Church. There will be a visitation and reception following the service.
