Christopher Allen Smith, 46, of Cary passed away at his residence Tuesday, August 25, 2015, after a short yet courageous battle with cancer. He was born March 22, 1969 in High Point, NC, a son of David Allen Smith and Ruth Culbreth Smith.
Chris was raised in Thomasville, NC and a graduate of Ledford Senior High School Class of 1987 where he participated in the marching band, All-County Band, All-State Band, and Greensboro Youth Symphony. He attended Appalachian State University, received his certification in Web Design from NC State University and graduated from East Carolina University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Communications.
Chris was recognized for his award winning web design, receiving state and national awards. He worked for the Wake County Government for the past 13 years as the Digital Media and Design Services Manager. Throughout his life he was very active in the community by volunteering for Meals on Wheels of Wake County, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of NC (2014 “Man of the Year” candidate), The Crape Myrtle Festival (Board Member and 2006 Event Co-Chair) and the NC Association of Government Information Officers (Board Member). Chris enjoyed DJ-ing, mobile photography and flying his drone, but most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family.
Chris was predeceased by his mother Ruth Culbreth Smith, and grandparents David and Mildred Culbreth and grandfather Avery Smith.
He is survived by his husband John Byrd of Cary; his children, Elizabeth, Alex and Nicholas all of Cary; his two brothers, Aaron Smith and Tracey Smith, both of Lexington, NC; his father, David Smith of Union, SC; and grandmother, Faye Price of Union, SC; Aunts and Uncles, Tony and Carolyn Hoglen of Denton, NC and David and June Culbreth of Clemmons, NC.
The funeral service was held Friday, August 28, 2015 at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Raleigh, 3313 Wade Ave. Raleigh. Interment followed at Historic Oakwood Cemetery, Raleigh.
