Dr. Kistler was born June 22, 1927 in the ranch house, in Larimer County, Colorado to the late George L. Kistler and Marian R. Clark. On his seventeenth birthday he was inducted into the Navy V-12 program and sent to Marquette University for pre-dental studies. WWII ended and he entered dental school in what is now called the University of Missouri, School of Dentistry at Kansas City. He opened his first dental office in 1949 in Raleigh. The "Doctor Draft law" called him into service for another two years during the Korean War as part of the Naval Dental Corps. He returned to his private practice in Raleigh until he retired in 1997. Dr. Kistler's main loves were his family, church, dentistry and golf. Dr. Kistler was a member of The Church of the Good Shepherd where he served on the Vestry, and as Junior Warden. He served as president of the Raleigh Dental Society, was a long time member of MacGregor Downs Country Club, played baritone with the Little German Band, danced with Club 17, and was a 40 year member of the West Raleigh Rotary Club.
Dr. Kistler was preceded in death by his son, Charles Kistler II, and is survived by his wife of 64 years, JoAnn Swetnam Kistler; four daughters, Barbara Oates (Tommy), Janice King (Garland), Leslie Hagarty, and Mary Bea Kolbe (Kent); 13 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
The visitation and memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 26th, 2013. The visitation will be from 1:30 – 2:30 with the memorial service immediately following at 3:00 pm. Both will be held at The Church of The Good Shepherd, 125 Hillsborough Street, Raleigh, NC 27603.
Dr. Kistler requested in lieu of flowers, that memorials be made to Hospice of Wake County, 250 Hospice Circle, Raleigh, NC 27607 or The Church of The Good Shepherd.
